My name is Walter Duy (pronounced Dewey). I have been involved in education my entire career spanning over forty years. I first served as a classroom teacher, then as a middle school principal and finally as an elementary principal. I generally felt that bullying was a common problem that most children must tolerate from time to time, but it truly wasn't anything one should consider serious. To some degree school shootings, of which we have become so familiar, have changed that attitude. I consider this an unfortunate way to call this problem to our attention, however bullying for the most part, is no longer taken lightly in many schools. As the Facilitator of a program that informs students and educators about the difficulties caused by bullying and how to deal with it, I am hoping to start a campaign that will educate the public. In the past, bullying has been considered a rite of passage for many students who eventually will survive and come out for the better. What has not been realized is that students find themselves in an impossible situation with no one willing to take steps to prevent the senseless attacks on innocent victims. The fact of the matter is that bullying is a serious action perpetrated by students who enjoy making others miserable, in some instances for many months or years at a time. Also, others then join in and compound the problem. Soon the victim accepts his fate and tolerates the constant torment. Everyone has a bullying story to tell. If there is one you would like to share, or have any information that may be helpful please contact me at waltd39@aol.com. Students, please use this e-mail address if you wish to send me a private message. There is also a post office box: Mr. Duy, Box 122, Sugar Grove, IL 60554.
I would like to acknowledge the generous and continuous sponsorship of the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley and more recently The Dunham Fund. The Peaceful Schools program would not exist without this support.
Together we can help make bullying go away. Remember, be nice to your neighbor.
Mr. Duy
